Second Year - Soap Opera

My second design project of my second year of university was to design a set for a soap opera. Our soap opera was to be set in Cardiff, on a street similar to that of Clifton Street. Our brief was to design 3 seperate sets; a downstairs business, an upstairs flat and an exterior to be buil on a backlot. Each student picked a business out of a hat. The business I picked out was a Youth/ Community Drop-In Centre. We were also given a set of characters, whom were to influence our design. The characters I was given were a gay couple living in the flat upstairs, who also ran a lot of meetings, such as coffee mornings and Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, downstairs in the Drop-In Centre. Their flat was to be something of a "Lad's Pad."

Much of my research for the project was done by looking at images from Pinterest:

A major part of the project was to produce a set of construction drawings. Alongside our drawings we were to include a set of construction notes for the interior sets.

The next major part of the project was to create models for each individual flat. These were to be made to 1:50 scale, with a removable fourth wall on both of the interior sets.

Exterior Set Model

As a bit of fun, a group of us lined up our finished exterior models, to look like a street of sets...

We also had to produce a set of visuals for the project. These had to be a good perspective view of the sets, preferably from an angle the sets would be filmed from. We were to produce a minimum of 1 visual per set.

I produced a 3DStudio Max model of my downstairs drop-in centre, in the first instance, then chose stills from the model and photshopped parts of the images over the top. For my two other visuals, I took photos of my finished models and used photoshop to render digitally painted images.

After finishing university, as a personal project, I also decided to practice my graphics skills in Illustrator and Photoshop. I chose to use this project as a case study, for which to create the graphics. This practice project can be found here!
